First up one of my all time favourites the Tezuka directed ‘Bagi the Monster of Mighty Nature’ (1984). It fosters psychedelic allusions and experimental techniques to tell the story of a girl who has 50/50 cat/human DNA and is the last of her kind after the rest got slaughtered.

At number 2 is Nadia : Secret of Blue Water. Starts in Paris in 1889, its got good battles, good characterisation and while a handful of the 39 episodes are throwaway the series is strong with the central theme being the relationship between the mysterious bluewater jewel and the lost city of Atlantis. Original concept on ANN is listed as none other than Hayao Miyazaki.

3rd is Samurai X: Trust and Betrayal, Rurouni Kenshin in Japanese.

Next is Barefoot Gen, its a horrific look at the atomic bomb drop in Hiroshima.The is a a trailer for the live action version.

At 5 comes Tokusatsu show Kure Kure Takora. In many ways it can be seen as a convergance of Teletubbies and The Magic Roundabout. With 260 2:41 minute episodes it will keep you entertained for a while. Here’s episode 244, inspired by William Tell?

New Miyazaki film ‘Gake no ue no Ponyo’ or Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea is looking good. Its been 4 years since Howl’s Moving Castle and it looks set to be another winner.

No list would be complete without Paprika, a film that simply dazzled me when I first saw it. Here’s a guy playing a paprika.

At 8 is Kirby of the Stars (Hoshi no Kaabii). Featuring a round 100 episodes we see Metaknight fighting alongside Kirby as King Dedede conjurs up a range of well animated monsters to take him down, there’s a lot social opinion in there and plot structures are unusually adept . JK Rowling gets a speaking role here in Episode 38 – watch out for demonbeast Broom King.

Rumiko Takahashi creator of Ranma 1/2 created Rumic Worlds in the beginning.

Still on TV in Japan its Regios.

Tamala 2010, similar in theme to my final choice.

At 12 its everyone’s favourite studio Gonzo with Linebarrel, excellent mechs.

She rocks, Queen Millenia.

Number 14 is Demon City Shinjuku or Wicked City as its known in the West.

At 15 its Cyborg 009. Good rave soundtrack in this AMV.

This one’s a bit special. If you watch one video on this list make it this one.

Lets bust out the mechs – Gasaraki, the only anime with a country called Belgistan. This one intersperses Noh culture through some kind of mystic dance with some decent mech on mech sequences. Not bad.

Back to the oldskool the one that started it all Bubblegum Crisis 2033. In this scene a ginger turns into a terminator. Fight scenes of this period don’t get much better than this.

Number 19 is one for the otaku -Ayakashi Bakeneko.

At 20, well you’ll just have to play it and see…

Seems like a good idea to have something topical as I return to my blogging ways here on The Red Flames of Revolution. We’ve seen all kinds of riots in recent days, protestors complaining about killing in Tibet. Is it a legitimate dispute, a cleverly executed strategy by foreign or national governments, or is it merely an excuse for the flint to be lit between Western and Eastern cultures? We’ll start with the most recent, this is San Francisco, pretty much now.

Next up a fight in the water fountain in London on April 6th.

According to Western media the incidents weren’t reported on Chinese television. Here it is on Chinese television.

The following day it was the turn of Paris.

A more detailed look at this after the break.

Here we’ll let both sides play out their side of the story. First up is the Chinese approach which focuses on the rights that China have to Tibet and and is certainly compelling.

Once again we’ll begin in topical form. Here are a group of Tibetan monks having fun on a rollercoaster.

Meanwhile here is superhot Burlesque model Dayna Delux.

Nokia and Cambridge University teamed up last month to launch the Nokia Morph Concept phone,intended to show the benefits of using nanotechnology to create more dynamic stretchable displays. The video coming right up.

These balloon dresses clearly had a lot of effort put into designing them. There’s a load more pictures right here.

Thats a pretty large button. Of similar stature is this run down of some of the best music out there. We’ll start with Roots Manuva and we’ll go back to his roots by showcasing his debut album the 2001 opus ‘Run Come Save Me’. There were two standout tracks, ‘Highest Grade’ and this classic tune ‘Witness.’

An artist I’m a long time fan of is Miss Kittin. I recently discovered her new album ‘Batbox’ and it certainly follows in the footsteps of its predecessors in terms of sheer quality. If this video for the track ‘Kittin is High’ is anything to go by the French DJ won’t be letting up anytime soon.

Just before the cut and this tune seems to be the one that will become dubstep anthem of 2008. Released a few weeks ago this is Caspa & Rusko. The tune is ‘Bread Get Bun’. Check it out.

Still on the dubstep this is Benga and Coki with the track ‘Night.’

Next a house tune on which premise I wholeheartedly agree. Its ‘I Don’t Like The Vibe In The VIP’ by Electrovamp, late 2007 release.

Next up falling somewhere between Intelligent Dance Music and Triphop comes Jamie Liddell, following in the footsteps of such legends as Squarepusher and Aphex Twin here’s his new track released earlier this year by his label Warp Records.

Today we’ll have a have a look at some of my favourites, some old, some new, all with what I perceive to be novel artistic styles within the genre. Start off with a new one this is Hakaba Kitarou. Here’s the beginning of the first episode.

When it comes to decent art style there’s not much that Mahiro Maeda of Animatrix notoriety doesn’t know. This is a 26 part series called Gankutsuou done at Gonzo. It is based on the classic book ‘The Count of Monte Cristo’. Here’s a 5 minute trailer – another cool one after the cut.

This is Mahou Shoujotai, it consists of 40 9-minute episodes and episode titles ranging from ‘Omen of Destruction’, ‘Interdimensional Sea’ and ‘Infiltration! Demon World’ give a good idea of the bizarre framework of the final piece.

Every anime so far has been an absolute belter, but now we’ll crank it up one more notch. This is ‘Belladonna of Sadness’ the 1973 Eichi Yamamoto directed, Osamu Tezuka produced psychedelic classic. Enjoy…

Been checking out the SomethingAwful forums recently and have found a lot of interesting stuff… it appears one ‘goon’ found a notebook when moving into a new apartment and it contained a story called Peach’s cake. Here’s a small sample click over for the rest.

This cake Peach was baking for Mario was the eighth in as many days. Her love was like insanity, repeating the same thing over and over, hoping for a different result. She would do the same with this one as with the others; a procession to Mario’s room where she would present it to him and then clumsily attempt to slip inside before Toad could stop her. He knew she wanted only a few moments alone and nothing could happen in that time, but he was King Toadstool’s chief advisor and wouldn’t let that happen. The Princess was an asset that needed to be preserved and couldn’t be wasted on a strange man from a strange land.

From a window high in Mushroom Castle, Luigi watched Mario savagely spur the Yoshi into motion. His brother’s mood was the blackest he’d seen since the night before they’d come to the Mushroom Kingdom. The end of a personal affair for Mario had left him in a torrid state; aggressive and pent-up, but completely frustrated for a release. Luigi ran his fingers over his mustache. The indescribable dreams that night kept tugging at Luigi’s mind as he looked down on the stables. Mario had confirmed they’d shared those dreams but had always remained completely unwilling to talk about them.

Got to feel sorry for this simpleton.

Today I think we’ll have a good run down of the best robots, their manufacturers and the new good websites to look at in a cornucopia of related fields. We’ll start with Paro the Seal Robot. See this robot as the Japanese perception of the Bhutanese mantra of Gross National Happiness as opposed to Gross National Product.

In the field of neuroscience there are a range of of contributing disciplines. One key discipline is the field of psychophysics – it is ‘based on the assumption that the human perceptual system is a measureing instrument yielding results (experiences, judgments, responses) that may be systematically analyzed.’ Apart from Paro there were a number of interesting new robots at the International Robot Exhibition in Tokyo which ran from November 28th – December 1st 2007.

At the Portuguese robotics facility VisLab the team has been working with ‘Mirror Neurons for Recognition’. This has become a popular and key field in neuroscience. They proclaim their campaign goals to be 2-fold: 1) to realize an artificial system that learns to communicate with humans by means of body gestures and 2) to study the mechanisms used by the brain to learn and represent gestures.

Meanwhile here is Neko the robotic cat.

The philosophy behind Paro the seal robot is clear:

Unlike industrial robots, “Mental Commitment Robots” are developed to interact with human beings and to make them feel emotional attachment to the robots. Rather than using objective measures, these robots trigger more subjective evaluations, evoking psychological impressions such as “cuteness” and comfort. Mental Commitment Robots are designed to provide 3 types of effects: psychological, such as relaxation and motivation, physiological, such as improvement in vital signs, and social effects such as instigating communication among inpatients and caregivers.

If you’re interested in researching further into psychophysics this seems like a good place to start. Here is the Reactable – more of an experiment musical interface than a robot.

It will certainly be interesting to see how such research develops. It seems wise in an emerging field to focus on research done by the most skilled experts and in neuroscience Vilayanur Ramachandran certainly seems like the man at the moment. Is this prediction or knowledge? ‘Lets advance to a point of time where we know everything there is to know about the intricate circuitry and functioning of the human brain. With this knowledge, it would be possible for a neuroscientist to isolate your brain in a vat of nutrients and keep it alive and healthy indefinitely.’ Here’s his August 2007 piece on the Neurology of Self Awareness. This is a piece of 2D physics sandbox software made by a Finnish company called Phun.

Today we’ll look at some more terms that entice the readership to my blog. One of my biggest hitters is Fetus-in-fetu, I believe it was mentioned in Cool Websites #8. It is defined thus:

A fetus-in-fetu is an encapsulated, pedunculated vertebrate tumor. It represents a malformed monozygotic, monochorionic diamniotic parasitic twin included in a host (or autosite) twin. I’ve watched a fair amount of decent Anime recently so today we’ll feature a handful of my favourite anime series. First up is Lucky Star, probably the ultimate slice of life anime out now aside from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. Here’s the intro.

This is when the Higarashi Cry remixed a touch.

This is Moyashimon, its an excellent otaku series, its a very unusual take on anime. The title translates to Tales of Agriculture.

Dennou Coil is an excellent series released last year.

Finally we have Rune Soldier Louie – this anime feature an excellent ‘transformation’ episode.

Well after the last feature in this category I’d like to return to Earth but it is 29th February – ‘From the perspective of 13:20 /4th dimensional time, February 29th is not a day. These are just arbitrary designations placed on cycles of time.’ – well we won’t get this day again till 2012… we certainly have been having earthquakes, power outages and various large scale disasters recently. Well we had weed and Kenyan tribes last time in this spot, this time I’ve decided that the theme of the day will be ‘religious parody’ and there’s simply no better way to start off than with what is the most amusing picture I’ve seen all year, I found it on the Frostfire Zoo site which is an excellent resource for alternative news. It seems to me that wherever you go on the Internet, be it Youtube, International news hubs or pretty much any blog that topics regarding racial issues get a disproportionate number of responses. Naturally this will filter into MMORPGs such as the ‘Burqa Babes of Second Life’ and from there on into an exponentially increasing degree of immersion until full exposure. Meanwhile here’s a nun who knows what she wants.

Is this how the world works?

This image depicts a fairly accurate representation of the route to atheism. Personally I think there’s a few more steps to go.

Belief in nothingness. Its certainly a condition, but if religion is evil then its clearly no opposite. To deny is of no use to the proletariat. Perhaps the most inspiring book I have read is ‘The Conqust of Bread’ by Peter Kropotkin. In defining Anarchist Communism he states ‘Anarchy leads to Communism, and Communism to Anarchy, both alike being expressions of the predominant tendency in modern societies, the pursuit of equality.’ He discusses how ‘existing societies, founded on Individualism, are inevitably impelled in the direction of Communism’ and this certainly seems true. From a logical perspective capitalism is an individualist society, capitalism is changing, the destination must be its opposite.

In San Francisco The Game Developers Conference has just finished. Here I’ll offer the best of the show on the Nintendo platforms. We’ll start off with Clover Studios Wii game ‘Okami’… this looks to be a title definitely worth picking up and certainly is a better fit than the PS2.

A new trailer for Mario Kart Wii was relased and it looks impressive.

EA certainly do seem to be diversifying. This is another interesting, original title that uses some kind of proprietary head tracking. Its called ‘Boomblox’.

‘Ninja Reflex’ is looking great as well.

End with a couple of titles hitting Wiiware over the next few months, the new indie game developers portal. This is Space Station Tycoon.

Finally an addicting looking game from Pop its ‘Pop Teaser 2′.

A meme so good, its got its own category. Why do people read my blog, aside from Emilie Autumn? Well there seem to be two key search terms that are sending my graph skyward – Alex Grey and Chococat. Here’s a Chococat slideshow.

There’s a Chococat fan site that is worth a look. You can also get Chococat accessories from Neotype Station. Incidentally this particular shop also does a selection of Keroppi items. Keroppi being the green frog, and my favourite from the Sanrio universe.

One of the best Alex Grey pieces around he certainly demonstrates skill in poise and perhaps a certain knowledge of Sacred Mathematics.

I seem to be getting hits all over the place for Emilie Autumn so lets give her pride of place once more. Here she is live with ‘Dead Is The New Alive’ in Milan in December last year.

Another superb live performance this is Rage Against the Machine live, in Germany, in 1993. One of the many classics off the debut album it’s ‘Take the Power Back’.
