Today we will look at my favourite anime series. I’ll streamline things by limiting myself to one series from one genre.

Bandai anime ‘The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya’ is a 14-parter and is unusually eccentric. The first episode is a short film made by the students who are then featured in the remaning episodes. Here’s an Anime Music Video (AMV) to give you more of an alternative perspective.

HQ version of this video can be found here.

  • From Production IG comes Otogi Zoshi – The first arc of 13 episodes is set in 10th Century Kyoto, during the Heian Period. It tells the story of Minamoto no Hikaru as she quests for the ‘magatama’ – various stones that she, and her companions will have to collect and bring back to the Imperial Palace for the onmyouji in order to save the city from destruction. Superb animation, an array of distinctive, personable characters make this arc an excellent anime at least. The second arc, also of 13 episodes is set in modern day Japan and fails to deliver with the same punch. Here’s a trailer for the first arc.

The next trailer is the opening for one of the most wacky and throughly amusing anime’s I’ve seen in a long time. It’s called Lucky Star and is well worth checking out.

  • Kirby of the Stars is an excellent modern anime with clean lines and very cute. It has 100 episodes and generally the plot is about Kirby saving Pupupu Land from a variety of ‘demon beasts’ summoned by King Dedede.
  • Noein is a superb anime dealing with time-travel and quantum physics and features the famous Ouroboros -an ancient symbol depicting a serpent or dragon swallowing its own tail. You can find the first episode dubbed here.

I’ll leave you with the latest trailer from the new Ghibli film Gedo Senki – ‘Tales of Earthsea’.
