We ended last time with the newest Ghibli Film so we’ll start this time with one of the oldest called ‘Panda Kopanda’. The original episode was made in 1972 and a second part followed the next year. It was made to celebrate pandas coming to Japan from China. Although Miyazaki wrote the story it was directed by Isao Takahata, who later went to on direct the excellent anime ‘Grave of the Fireflies’.

All anti-war animes are measured against the impressive and exacting standard of Barefoot Gen. Keiji Nakazawa told his eyewitness account of the destruction at Hiroshima through ten mangas of which the first four are available today. Three liveaction films and two animes were produced from these books. The anime skilfully blends viewpoints from both American and Japanese perspectives through a very youthful, vibrant art style. It showcases true realism in day-to-day family life and the devastating effect the community suffered. AMV coming up next.

It tells the tale of a young boy having to deal with his mother’s heroin addiction. Like Trainspotting but more gritty, less arty. Here’s a fan trailer.
